Overview
The Higher Diploma in Applied Statistics (HDAS) offered by the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL) is a one-year academic programme designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of statistical theory and its practical applications. The programme develops analytical, critical thinking, and data analysis skills required for careers in statistics, research, data science, business analytics, and related fields.
The HDAS is equivalent to Level 2 of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Statistics.
The academic year consists of two semesters, and each semester spans 20–24 weeks (including the examination period) over approximately six calendar months.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:
- Hold the Diploma in Applied Statistics (DAS) awarded by the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL); or
- Successfully complete Level 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics as a subject, including coursework in:
- Probability
- Descriptive Statistics
- Distribution Theory
- Statistical Inference; or
- Possess an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Executive Council of the IASSL.
Credit Exemptions
Credit exemptions may be granted subject to the following conditions:
- The Executive Council, upon the recommendation of the Academic and Training Committee (ATC), may grant exemptions based on previously completed qualifications.
- The total credit exemptions granted shall not exceed 10 credits out of the 30 credits required for the award of the Higher Diploma.
- Exempted course units will be assigned a Grade C.
